(I admit I'm taking a risk.)
Aka Adriana Saviozzi and Adriana Mazza Saviozzi, she lives in
Florence.
"Once upon a time, four kittens were born in a corner of a
barn. . .'Children,' Mother Cat said one day, 'the time has come for
you to decide what kind of cats you will be.' It was easy for Tuff -
he wanted to become an Alley Cat like Uncle Tom, and Luff was sure he
wanted to be a Ship's Cat like Uncle Tar. Ruff thought the life of a
Farm Cat was just right for him, but Muff didn't have a clue - nothing
seemed right until one day. . ."
Also, in Amazon, the few reviewers talk about how horrible life really
is for alley cats - that is, unwanted cats - and how, while they love
the book, one might want to seize the opportunity to talk to children
about the need to provide homes for all domestic animals - and maybe
even the need for spaying and neutering.
Incidentally, Ruff, who chooses to be a Farm Cat, is following in his
mother's footsteps! Surely an unusual literary gesture in 1957.
The book was re-illustrated by Lilian Obligado in 1986.

"The Garcia family has recently moved to New York from Panama, and
Mrs. Garcia is concerned that her little girl might get lost. This is
exactly what happens - Anita is lost - and while she strolls along
Fifth Avenue, hand in hand with her new friend, the policeman, her
mother is having a worried taxi ride in pursuit of the bus she thinks
is carrying her child farther and farther away. But when she arrives
alongside the bus, the driver tells Mrs. Garcia that a policeman is
taking Anita back to the corner where they became separated. So back
Mrs. Garcia starts running, to catch up with her lost little girl!
