His birthday was on Feb. 24th.

Born Jerzy Henryk Orlowski in Warsaw, he now lives in Jerusalem. He
has translated many Polish works into Hebrew.

"After being smuggled out of the ghetto and hidden by Polish families,
Orlev and his younger brother were sent to Bergen-Belsen where they
remained for two years. They were liberated by the 9th US Army in 1945
and immigrated to Eretz Israel."

"His books have been translated into 38 languages."

"In 1996, Uri Orlev received the Hans Christian Andersen Award, the
highest international recognition given to an author of children's
books, for his lasting contribution to children's literature."

(This is about the film version of "The Island on Bird Street," made
in 1997. There are ten viewer comments and several professional
reviews. "Alex is an 11-year old boy who, during WWII, hides in the
Jewish ghetto from Nazis after all the relatives have been sent to the
concentration camp. The movie portrays the ghetto through his eyes.")
