Born Berwyn, Illinois, she now lives in Alexandria, Virgina.
From 1965 to 1973, she was an assistant professor at Gallaudet University, Washington, DC.
From "Contemporary Authors":
"...I became completely caught up in the enormity of the issue of deaf people struggling for self-expression and interpersonal communication. I believe I was particularly sensitive to this issue, since my philosophy professors were, at the time, expounding on the fact that man was no longer being perceived as the 'rational animal,' but instead as the 'communicating animal'--i.e., one's humanity is actualized not by possessing thoughts, but by the process of sharing thoughts with others.
"I arrived on the Gallaudet campus in 1965 and spent my first ten years teaching deaf preschoolers. It was during this time that I, along with Dr. Harry Bornstein, developed Signed English, a special sign language designed to enhance young deaf children's understanding and use of the English language. Signed English is a 'bi-model' system; the user is expected to sign and talk at the same time. Thus the deaf child whose parents use Signed English will receive both a visual and auditory 'picture' of English; if the deaf child is unable to comprehend the auditory picture, then the visual 'picture' (Signed English) will compensate. Signed English allows deaf children to clearly see the vocabulary, grammar, and syntax of English, which, in turn, allows them to understand, speak, read, and write English. The combining of English-based signs with spoken English has been a real breakthrough in the field of deaf education and I am thrilled at the realization that, in some small way, I have been able to enhance deaf children's skills as 'communicators.'..."
