From a friend of mine. I had no idea, thought maybe some people here
could help.

<<I'm hoping you can help me I.D. a book I had when I was a little
girl. Of course, I don't remember the title or the author or any of
the characters' names, but here goes...

It was mostly about two sisters, I think...maybe three. Two of them
were teenage. One of them had a strange name like "Lettuce." I don't
think it was spelled exactly like that, but it was close...I know it
always made me think of the vegetable. *g* For some reason, I keep
thinking they lived, went to school, or were visiting in the
mountains. The Alps keep coming to mind, but I could be waaaay off
base. (And no, it's not Heidi.). Anyway, at some point one sister
had an accident and they thought she'd never walk again. I think I
remember the requisite feeling sorry for herself and her sister or a
boyfriend bullying her into working hard to walk again. Maybe.

Maybe the sister who can walk falls in love with the boyfriend of the
one who can't. Argh! My brain is swiss cheese. Might have been a
marriage...or two, at the end.

I keep seeing the word "chalet" in my mind, and I know there's a
series of books called "The Chalet School" but I don't think it's one
of those. But it could be. The girls might have been away at this
school.

That's all I've got. I leave it in your hands. *g*>>

Thanks in advance for any help!

A long shot, but could this be the Katy books by Susan Coolidge?

What Katy Did
What Katy Did At School
What Katy Did Next
Clover
In The High Valley

Katy had a sister called Clover, had a serious injury falling off a swing,
went to boarding school and visited Europe.

Ring any bells?

Stephen.

You could be confusing several similar books about girls at school,
but identical twins, one with such a name, appear in the "Mysterious
Twins" series, of which there are at least two books.

Are you REALLY sure it's not Heidi? That book has several elements that
match your description, including a girl (Klara) who can't walk and is
bullied into doing it, and a boy who is potentially a romantic match for
either girl. And the Alps, of course, and the chalet.

The name you are remembering might be Lettice, which is a girl's name no
longer used much.

Here is the exchange regarding these books from "Solved Mysteries" at
"Stump the Bookseller" at Loganberry Books, which can be found at
www.logan.com/loganberry
It's good I looked, as I had the title a bit wrong, but I think you'll
find the description matches:

Mystifying Twins
I had two paperback books about twins that were probably published
about 1970.  The twins went to boarding school and tricked people by
trading places with each other.  Their names began with L, I think,
and they were not rhyming names. In the second book, one of the twins
had an accident and was temporarily paralyzed. I don't know the
author or titles.

T35 I think it may be Lisa and Lotte (was it by Erich Kastner?).  It's
the book on which the movie "The Parent Trap" was based.
The person could be thinking of 2 different books: Lisa and Lottie by
Erich Kastner - two twins meet at summer camp and switch places (there
are the "L" names) or The Twins at St. Clare's by Enid Blyton in which
two mischievious twins attend boarding school - this one is a series,
but the twins are Pat and Isabel.
#T35--Twins, tricky.  I think I've definitely found these: Delightful
Stories by Joan Price Reeve from Moody Press Publications, The
Mystifying Twins. Because Lois and Lettice Belmont are identical
twins, they become involved in innumerable humorous and exciting
adventures.  Their daring pranks at Rivercote School continually get
them in trouble, not only with their friends but also with the
headmistress.  Midnight banqueting, hiding frogs in bed, chasing
ghosts, and falling into the river add spice to their lives.  Told in
a pleasing, informal style, the story moves swiftly.  Spiritual crises
confront the twins when Lois becomes a Christian while at summer camp.
The Secret of the Mystifying Twins. Excitement fills the air as the
twins return to Rivercote and immediately
team up with their old friend Jane Smith, who always shares with them
in their delightful pranks.  Then a sudden accident cripples Lettice.
Jealousy, hate and fear fill Lettice's heart.  But soon she learns
that 'all things work together for good,' and faith, hope and prayer
bring victory.  The Lord richly rewards the twins for their shining
testimonies.  Both of these were in print by 1963.
Enid Blyton, The twins at St. Clares, ca 1940s. This is one of a
series of books taking the O'Sullivan twins through their boarding
school days, in England.
I am very grateful to the suggestions made but they have not found the
book I am after. My sister remembers the illustrations which depict
little-dark-haired girls, one in gingham with pigtails. It is not a
"Fun and school-adventures" book. The girls have quite a hard time in
the book.  Thank you for your wonderful website!

Although the original poster (OP) said it wasn't the right book, it
ended up being listed as "Solved" under the suggestion I submitted.
Perhaps her sister was also thinking of several different books!

Great, it makes my day when I can do something right! Those books are
one of my good memories because I bought one cheap at a library sale
and sold it for fifteen bucks.
