Does anyone know anything about _My Pet Goat,_ the book George W. Bush
was reading to schoolchildren on the morning of 9/11/2001? With the
release of Michael Moore's _Fahrenheit 911_ today, which shows Bush
reading the book aloud for seven minutes while the WTC attack
unfolded, _My Pet Goat_ looks to be headed for fifteen minutes of
fame.

I can't find a trace of this book at isbn.nu or in various library
searches. Is anyone sitting next to Books in Print today?

I'm a bit surprised that whoever published this isn't already plugging
it for a brief burst of sales. My niece's fourth birthday is coming
up, and her parents are fans of political irony . . .

I couldn't find anything in Amazon. Weird.

However, it made me look up Isaac Bashevis Singer's "Zlateh the Goat," which
I'd never read, and to my surprise, the plot matched a short live-action film
I'd seen in school in the 1970s! Trouble is, I can't find the movie in the
IMDb, but maybe school films don't get listed there. It's a lovely story.

My husband did a thorough search and couldn't find anything anywhere
about the book. He wondered if it could be by a publisher who only
sells to schools, or something like that. *I* wonder if the whole thing
was faked, to hide the fact that Bush can't actually read. ;-)

I'm so glad someone else started this subject ;)
I also did several searches, even using variations. Nada,
zip, zilch.

Where's Deborah Stevenson when we need her?

What we need is one of those images of Bush reading
the book. Moore might have screwed up the title.

Well, on Michael Moore's web site is a "verse of the day from
My Pet Goat". That doesn't prove anything, but I suppose you
could Email to ask him for the book's publication info.

Verse of the day from My Pet Goat: "She played with the goat in her yard. "

But yes, it is odd. I tried the Library of Congress catalogue;
it has no knowledge of books containing "pet goat" in the title.

Someone on Child_Lit recently posted: "I watched the video of the event and it
appears that the story is from a
book (basal?). The teacher tells the kids to open their books to lesson
6(?) on page 183 and then they begin to read. Bush is offered a book to
read along."

Someone asked me to post this for them:

I never seem to be able to post to rec.arts.books.children but it's
from a basal reader. There's a video of the event
http://www.buzzflash.com/analysis/2002/06/scsb.bush.mov which I
haven't
been able to access.

Tell him or her to add an "s" to the end of "children". The newsgroup
is "rec.arts.books.childrens". Good luck!

Here's someone who's done a LOT of research on it:
http://petro.typepad.com/ledgeofliberty/2004/06/the_pet_goat_a_.html
and there's an entire video of the classroom sequence.

It seems that "My Pet Goat" is a story within the book
being read, and we need NASA to sharpen up the image
of the book itself.

Abraham Lincoln's son Tad was very fond of his pet goat. Was "My Pet
Goat" by any chance owned by "Our American Cousin"?

The very word tragedy means "goat song" and ancient Greek Tragedy is
dedicated to Dionysus, the God of duality and paradox (REMEMBER THE
WTC!). SEE THE DOUBLE DESTRUCTION?

Dionysus is also the God of the Mask....Remember the face/mask that
appeared momentarily when the second plane hit?

The USA is under attack by a God named Dionysus.... Who will win?

It is very simple that no one can find 'My Pet Goat' anywhere on the
internet to buy. John Ashcroft using the Patriot Act has had them removed
from public access. I understand he reads it to the President frequently.

I found it finally. You can buy My Pet Goat from Amazon. It is part of a
larger teaching module.

I thought Cheney was supposed to be Bush's "nanny" (not goat, though.)
Someone posted this on rec.arts.tv:

If you like, you can hear "The Pet Goat" read by Morning Sedition's
Marc Maron and Mark
Riley at <http://airamericaplace.com/upload/aams072304br32.mp3>.

It's in the second hour of the program, so fast-forward about 65
minutes.
